How Long–Adaption of a psalm of Lament/Response to Yet More Violence

How long, O God? Will you forget us for ever?
How long will you hide your face from us?

How long must we bear the pain of losing loved ones to senseless violence,
and have terror in our hearts?

How long will places like schools and churches and city streets be places we fear?

How long shall fear be exalted over us?

O God we seek to trust You

and in You

but somedays

bullet-proof vests

and metal detectors seem more reliable

more sure

more real

than You.

I yearn to preach Your peace

a peace that today

seems so very far away.

But I trust in You O God

I trust that weapons can never heal

that wars do nothing but wound.

I trust that poetry and prayer

can indeed change the world.
